Tai Chi for Arthritis & Fall Prevention

Tai Chi for Arthritis & Fall Prevention incorporates Tai Chi principles for improving health and wellness. Based on Sun-style Tai Chi, it has gentle flowing movements that are easy to learn, safe and enjoyable for all levels, and can be modified to a seated position.

Y members have access to Tai Chi for Arthritis & Fall Prevention at the Kaimuki-Waialae Y, Kalihi Y, Leeward Y**, Mililani West Oahu Y, Nu‘uanu Y, and Windward Y!

**Leeward Y’s Tai Chi for Arthritis & Fall Prevention class is free and open to anyone (regardless of Y membership) age 60 and older.

Enhance®Fitness

Enhance®Fitness is an evidence-based, certified fall prevention and arthritis management program. It is designed to help older adults become more active, energized, and empowered for independent living. Enhance®Fitness has been recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other organizations committed to improving the health of older adults.

While this program is currently on hold at our Y locations, Pearl City Community Church has partnered with the Y and Hawaii’s Healthy Aging Partnership to offer two Enhance®Fitness classes at their Pearl City Church location. Classes are led by certified instructors in a relaxed environment that promotes fun, laughter & friendship. Some benefits of Enhance®Fitness include: reduced arthritis symptoms and improved endurance, balance, strength & flexibility.

Classes are open to the public to participants age 60+ and registration is required as space is limited to 21 participants. Classes are 1 hour in length and are currently offered Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 11:30am-12:30pm and Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 1-2pm. While there is no cost to participate, donations to help maintain the program are appreciated.

What to expect in each class:

  • 5-minute warmup to get blood flowing to your muscles
  • 20 minutes of low-impact aerobics or walking to lively music
  • 5-minute cooldown
  • 20 minutes of strength training with soft ankle or wrist weights
  • 10 minutes of stretching to keep muscles flexible
  • Multiple balance & posture exercises throughout class
