POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Program Director - Membership, Healthy Lifestyles, and Kupuna supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Senior Membership, Healthy Lifestyles  Director supports the organizational strategic priority of advancing holistic health for kupuna, individuals and the community. 

This position provides key leadership in the Kupuna Subject Matter Area through spearheading kupuna strategies, initiatives, and operations for the YMCA of Honolulu and developing and implementing programs and services to address kupuna member and community needs. These include congregate dining, group exercise classes, and social events, health plan partnerships, grant-funded and evidence-based programs to ensure the programs meet their intended goals. Responsible for the development, growth, administration, achievement, and evaluation of evidence-based kupuna fitness programs and congregate and recreation dining programs to advance kupuna programs across the Association and the island of Oahu.  This position helps build capacity across all branches to deliver the programs and approaches necessary to support kupuna and ensure compliance with grant guidelines.

The Senior Program Director - Membership, Healthy Lifestyles, and Kupuna directs all aspects of membership for the Kaimuki-Waialae branch including recruitment of new members, retention of existing members, and supervision of assigned staff.  Develops, plans, and implements new procedures and methods to achieve strategic goals. Helps to drive membership sales and member retention strategies for the branch and the Association. This role works under the direct supervision of the Branch Executive Director and close collaboration with the Membership & Healthy Lifestyles Executive and Membership Subject Matter Area Leader to advance association and branch priorities, enhance membership, kupuna, and healthy lifestyles programs and services, and fund operations and staffing through membership revenue streams.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Implements membership strategies that support recruitment of new members and retention of existing members. Creates a member-focused culture and models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Fosters a climate of innovation and resolves problems to ensure member satisfaction.

  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs personnel and volunteers as needed. Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  • Participates in the planning of the annual budget; manages and implements the approved budget for membership and kupuna and takes appropriate action to correct variances.
  • Ensures proper implementation of Welcome Center procedures. Reviews and updates procedures and communicates changes to staff. Coordinates with the business office as necessary on financial transactions.
  • Organizes membership and kupuna events at the YMCA and represents the YMCA at community events to promote the YMCA.
  • Leads assigned aspects of the annual campaign and other fundraising initiatives.
  • Ensures the Y meets the needs of members and the community through developing, marketing, and implementing membership & wellness programs, strategies, and initiatives.
  • Develops and implements Membership and kupuna programs and events that drive branch and Association annual membership growth and retention goals.
  • Develops and implements Healthy Lifestyles programs to include virtual offerings, group exercise, kupuna programming, specialty holistic health and wellness programs, and personal and group training.
  • Serves as a community liaison to special groups and individuals. Attends community health and wellness events.
  • Coordinates and leads special events and offerings for Membership, Kupuna, and Healthy Lifestyles.
  • Assists in the leadership and advancement of kupuna programming and services for the association, including grant-funded programs for kupuna.
    • Ensures the strategic and tactical goals of the Association are met. Keeps in mind the Strategic Advantages of the association: The Y is an inclusive community-centered organization with a wide range of locations and multigenerational programs led by quality staff and volunteers. The Y is a trusted community partner with a respected brand and reputation. 
    • Utilizes the association Strategy Screen in operational decision-making.
    • Understands the Association's Strategic Priorities including advancing holistic health for individuals and our community, helping youth achieve their full potential, and elevating the Y brand while articulating the positive impact of the organization.
    • Performs other duties as assigned including assisting in driving Association-wide projects and initiatives.

Program Development:

  • Develops and implements programs and events that drive the Association's annual membership and kupuna program growth and retention goals.
  • Develops and implements Healthy Lifestyles programs to include virtual offerings, group exercise, kupuna programs, holistic specialty health and wellness programs, and personal and group training.
  • Serves as a community liaison to special groups and individuals. Attends community health and wellness events.  Serves as a representative for the Y in community outreach initiatives and kupuna-centered community groups.
  • Coordinates and leads special events and offerings for Membership, Kupuna, and Healthy Lifestyles. Assists in the promotion of programs and membership to support the total marketing efforts of the association. 
  • Explores innovation in class and program offerings. Periodically evaluates class offerings for each location to ensure they are balanced and reflective of membership and community needs.
  • Assists in the development of virtual experiences for health and well-being, including live stream Group Exercise, Y360 virtual platform, and virtual community challenges.
  • Ensures Kupuna programs and services meet community needs including supervising existing program activities, establishing new program activities, and expanding the program within the community as needed. Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information.
  • Assists in the management of grant-funded Kupuna programs. Requires accurate gathering of data, statistics, and ability to provide reports and well-written narratives to the funder in a timely manner. Writes and edits grant applications and reports. Develops tools to measure and track outcomes for programs.
  • Serves as a leader on the Membership/Healthy Lifestyles/Kupuna SMA Team and other professional committees as assigned. Assists in the growth and responsibilities of the Membership/Healthy Lifestyles/Kupuna Team and other assigned task function groups.
  • Ensures prompt quality service is provided in a friendly, timely, and professional manner. Ensures a high level of service to others with a commitment to improving lives and strengthening our community.

Staff Development:

  • Works with branch Membership and Healthy Lifestyles team members to ensure
  • Audits files for staff to ensure compliance with all current certifications, CPR & First Aid certifications, and required training.
  • Listens empathetically and communicates for understanding when negotiating and dealing with conflict.
  • Provides training and development opportunities for staff and volunteers.

Fiscal Management:

  • Assists in funding operations and staffing by driving membership revenue streams. Works to continue to grow membership revenues for the association to exceed annual budget targets.
  • May assist with developing and managing annual budgets.
  • Develops, monitors, and manages the program budget for assigned areas to meet fiscal objectives; compiles program statistics to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of and participation in membership/programs; maintains program records or files; and generates required reports to grant funders and Y leadership.
  • Produces and uses management data; submits accurate and timely reports.
  • Executes positive management of income/expense budget to ensure year-end target net.
  • Takes proactive interventions on budget variances and develops action plans for improvement.

Member/Volunteer Relations:

  • Provides opportunities for greater involvement in the YMCA.
  • Enlists, trains, and recognizes volunteers.
  • Organizes and maintains relationships with member and participant groups.

Financial Development:

  • Participates in the Annual Campaign.
  • May provide recruitment and relationship building for campaigners for the Annual Campaign.
  • Builds relationships and may serve as a team member in functions related to the Annual Campaign and development tasks as assigned by supervisor. Cultivates relationships to support fundraising.

Community Development:

  • Builds community within the association by working together in inter-department and inter-branch groups.
  • Collaborates with the Elderly Affairs Division, Kupuna Collective, and other community organizations and groups.
  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions; develops and maintains collaborative relationships with staff, program members, caregivers, and community organizations to maximize program impact and drive overall outcomes; maintains regular, clear, and concise communication within the area of responsibility.
  • Develops additional delivery locations and virtual programming in our community. Expands programs and locations to address holistic health strategies.

Facility Management:

  • Assist with ordering and maintaining fitness equipment assets for the association.

Marketing and Public Relations:

  • Communicates YMCA mission, and programs, and promotes awareness of YMCA activities and events to the community.
  • Exemplifies the YMCA mission and the pillars of character development: honesty, caring, respect, responsibility, and diversity.

Association Support:

  • Provides leadership in association, and participates in association events.
  • Leads, schedules, and participates in association training.

Safety & Risk Management:

  • Prevents/minimizes casualties or accidents by ensuring a safe environment for all program participants and members. Helps to identify any risk management or safety issues with Welcome Centers, Healthy Lifestyles areas, Kupuna program areas, and Child Watch areas.
  • Maintains a “safety-first” mindset and immediately corrects any safety hazards.

Child Abuse Prevention:

  • Ensures that staff and volunteer screening requirements & instruments are being used consistently to mitigate abuse risk.
  • Provides staff and volunteers with ongoing supervision and training related to abuse risk by providing regular feedback regarding boundaries and consumers.
  • Reinforce staff and volunteers to adhere to policies and procedures related to abuse risk.
  • Responds seriously and confidentially to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors, and responds quickly to policy and procedure violations using the organization’s progressive disciplinary procedures.
  • Complies with the YMCA and State of Hawaii abuse reporting requirements.
  • Reports all violations of essential abuse risk incidences to the Executive Director, Chief Operations Officer, or the Chief Financial Officer immediately.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Skills/Knowledge:

  • Computer literate, proficient in Microsoft Office programs, and excellent technology experience.
  • Ability to operate and train in Active Net and other systems such as MotionVibe, Alaris, etc.
  • High knowledge of designing, conducting, and implementing safe and effective programs and events.
  • High knowledge of general health and wellness.
  • Strong customer service and sales skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, well organized and multi-tasked oriented.

Education/Training:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid required.
  • TB required.

Experience:

  • 5 years minimum experience in a leadership and supervisory position, preferably with the YMCA organization.
  • 5 years minimum experience working in membership, sales, customer service, and health & wellness-related
  • 2 years of grant management experience preferred.
  • Experienced in working with, training, and developing staff and volunteers.
  • General office operations experience preferred.
